Whether you’re looking for a place to hike, sit and watch the birds, or gather with friends, Eliza Howell has something for everyone.

History

Eliza Howell Park is a public park in the Brightmoor neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan. The park was originally opened when the family of Eliza Howell, a former Detroit real estate developer, donated 138 acres of their land to the city in 1936.

Natural Gem

The park currently has 250 acres of land, making it the fourth largest park in Detroit. Its 2 miles of trails are maintained by neighbors and volunteers. The park is considered a gem for its biological diversity.

Art and Programs

In addition to its beautiful natural landscape, the park also is home to Patrick Doughtery’s ‘Stickwork’ sculpture. Click here for more details.

Sidewalk Detroit, a non-profit that exists to advance public life and strong social infrastructure through the lens of arts, culture, collaborative design and deep engagement with residents, began work in 2016 to uplift Eliza Howell. Sidewalk has been using deep community engagement, innovative arts programming and park beautification upgrades as ways to re-activate and renew public engagement with the park. That work is part of a long-term vision to upgrade and revitalize existing recreational and natural elements, curate outdoor art installations specific to the Brightmoor community and to produce events in Eliza Howell Park with the shared aims of engaging residents in artistic and recreational activities.
